President’s Report October 2020

Oct 14, 2020

Hello Members of MAHU!

I hope you and your families are staying safe and starting to get back to some sense of normalcy.

We are smack dab in the middle of the silly season and things a heating up. I don’t know about you, but I am very much looking forward to the election being over, so I do not have to watch another political ad on TV for at least a year from now! Please remember, the most important thing we can do as Americans is vote, whatever your political lean, we must stay active and involved to make a difference.

Your membership dues are being put to great use as our MAHU and NAHU lobbyists are busy being a strong voice for you and your clients in Michigan and Washington, DC. They are meeting daily with some of the most influential members of the legislatures, educating them on important NAHU issues. We need your support more than ever to make sure legislators understand why brokers are so vitally important to helping our clients make the best decision for their business and their families. You work each day with individuals, families and employers of all sizes to help them purchase health insurance coverage and be their healthcare advocate. We need you to just “Ask One” of your peers or vendor partners to join our association. We need to grow our membership to be able to continue our strong voice in Lansing and Washington, DC and to strengthen our industry. NAHU strongly opposes all forms of single-payer healthcare and is committed to promoting employer-sponsored health coverage and preserve Medicare, Medicaid and other existing health programs and yet we have politicians promoting the idea of a single-payer system. The more members we have will help us to increase our ability to educate legislators as to why a single-payer system is not the best way forward and the private system is still the best option.

We held our virtual Leadership Conference on September 23rd. It was well attended as a little over 100 members signed in and we received very positive feedback from our survey. Due to the COVID, we had to cancel some of our events the help us to maintain our budget. Through the generous support of our sponsors and the panelist/presenters who gave their time and talents, we were able to recoup some of the lost revenue from our previously canceled events and it helped us to stay on budget. Hopefully after the first of the year, we will be able to have CE and Legislation Day meetings in person.

Once again, thank you for allowing me to serve as the MAHU President!
